Bernard Volken studierte an der Universität Freiburg i.Üe. Das Anwaltspatent erwarb er im Kanton Zürich. Von 1994 bis 2000 arbeitete er am Eidgenössischen Institut für Geistiges Eigentum (IGE), zuletzt als Leiter der Sektion Markenwiderspruchsverfahren. Seit 2000 arbeitete er als selbständiger Rechtsanwalt und Partner in einer Berner IP Anwaltskanzlei. Seit 2022 ist er Partner bei der Kanzlei Troller Hitz Troller. Bernard Volken ist im Bereich Immaterialgüterrecht spezialisiert. Er meldet Marken- und Designrechte weltweit an und setzt diese wenn nötig gerichtlich durch. Daneben ist er auch im Vertrags- und Sportrecht tätig.

Bernard Volken hat verschiedene Lehraufträge in seinem Fachgebiet, unter anderem an der Universität Tongji in Shanghai sowie für Sportrecht in Zürich. Weiter ist er Experte bei der Weltorganisation für Geistiges Eigentum (WIPO) in den Bereichen Marken- und Designrecht.

Er ist Mitglied in diversen Fachorganisationen wie der International Trademark Association (INTA), der European Communities Trademark Association (ECTA), der internationalen Vereinigung von Markeninhabern (MARQUES), des Instituts für gewerblichen Rechtsschutz (INGRES) sowie des Berner und Schweizerischen Anwaltsverbandes.

Bernard Volken hat zahlreiche Publikationen verfasst. Er referiert regelmässig an Schweizer und internationalen Kongressen. Er arbeitet auf Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch.
